Avalanche Skills Course 1

Stay safe in the backcountry with the essentials of avalanche awareness.

The Avalanche Skills Course 1 (previously known as Avalanche Awareness) is an introductory level course and will teach you the fundamentals of personal safety when travelling in avalanche terrain. This course is delivered in two parts, theory and practical. The practical day is on foot, travelling on snowshoes. All equipment and transport to the ski field from Basecamp Adventures Queenstown is included in the course cost.

It is an ideal introduction into avalanche education for skiers, transalpine trampers and climbers. Basecamp Adventures is a Mountain Safety Council endorsed provider of ASC1.

Avalanche Skills Course 1 Curriculum

The course is delivered in two parts:

  • Evening Class (3 Hrs) 6-9pm. Introductions, course outline, safety and pre-trip planning, avalanche forecasting, and web resources.
  • Practical Day (8 Hrs) 8am-4pm. Equipment check and safety brief, pre-trip avalanche information, visit ski patrol, transceiver searching, digging and probe techniques, snow profiles, safe travel and route selection.
